Maria was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Lignum, Virginia. She was the family matriarch with an astounding memory. Before her eyesight began to wane, she was an avid reader, enjoyed tending flowers, collecting butterflies, experimenting with recipes, watching cooking shows and 60 Minutes. During her most senior years, chatting with family members and friends on the telephone was a soothing method of visitation. Maria was educated in Culpeper County schools and worked as a domestic and later a laundress at the Fredericksburg Nursing Home.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, Virginia, with the Rev. Frank D. Lewis officiating.
Interment will immediately follow the service at Laurel Hill Memorial Park, Spotsylvania, Virginia.
