Gerald S. Schrage, 85, of Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, Va., passed from this life on February 16, 2019 at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Elmira, N.Y. in 1933, he was preceded in death by his parents, Lena and Armin Schrage, four brothers, George, Russell, Arnie and Bernie and one sister, Margaret. Moving to Virginia in 1971, he lived in Manassas, Va., for twenty-eight years and then at Lake of Woods for the last 19 years. Jerry was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, a LOW AARP member and a member of the LOW Veterans Club. He was also a former member of the LOW Lions Club. He volunteered for the Orange County Tourist Bureau and was an Election Officer for the county.
Jerry served with the Army engineers during the Korean War. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, N.Y., a Graduate Degree in telecommunications from Cornell University and a master's degree in Systems Engineering from VA Polytechnic Institute and State University. He spent 40 years in the telecommunications industry beginning with ten years with New York Telephone Company proceeding on to Computer Sciences Corporation, DATRAN, American Satellite Corporation and then spending the last twenty-five years serving rural telecommunications at the Rural Electrification Administration at the US Department of Agriculture. His final position with REA was Chief of Southeast Area where he was responsible for approving and guiding the engineering plans for 25 of the Rural Telephone Companies in the U.S.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Judith A., a daughter, Nancy and her husband Danny Tavenner of Broad Run, Va., and a son, Steven Schrage and his wife, Tuyen of Falls Church, Va. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Daniel, Victoria, James and Megan Tavenner, Kyra, Sydney and Emma Schrage. His family was the light of his life and he enjoyed playing with his grand-dogs.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday February 21 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fredericksburg with Father Wooton officiating. For the last several years, Jerry has been an enthusiastic member of the Church History class. Before his passing, he invited the class to celebrate his passing. A private interment will be held in Culpeper National Cemetery.
