On May 22, 2019, Elizabeth Virginia Poindexter Ellis answered the Master’s call and peacefully entered into the portals of heaven at Spotsylvania Regional Hospital in Spotsylvania, Virginia. She was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph Addison Poindexter and Flossie V. Poindexter Banks.
Elizabeth gave her life to Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of Branch Fork Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor O. S. Robinson.
She attended the Granite Springs School and graduate from the John J. Wright consolidated school in Spotsylvania, Virginia.
She retired from the Spotsylvania County school system after serving 40 plus years as a cafeteria worker, where she took pride and enjoyed serving the children and faculty.
She was a mother, granny and auntie to many of the neighborhood kids and adults. She always enjoyed mentoring to the young. Often times telling stories of her childhood to enlighten them on just how good they have it She also enjoyed cooking; everyone knew whose house to go to on a holiday, a Sunday, or just any old day of the week. But her passion was baking whether it was sweet potato pie, sour cream pound cake, delicious homemade yeast rolls, or her famous well known apple and peach cobblers.
She received training at the McGuire Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, to care for her husband, the late Carl R. Ellis, when he became ill. She also cared for her mother-in-law, the late Rosa Penn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl R. Ellis; two sons, Carl Jr. and Jack James Ellis; two daughters, Rosa and Shirley Ellis; a grandson, Herman Samuels; her parents; a brother, William H. Poindexter; a sister, Gladys Jackson; four brothers-in-law, Edward, Leon, Warren and James.
She leaves behind or is survived by her children, Charles, Linda, and Veronica Ellis, all of Spotsylvania; eight grandchildren, Maurico, Carlene, Antoinette, James, Michael, Tiffany, Spencer and Brittany; seven great-grandchildren, Moesha, Tyre, Maurice, Kaniya, Alanna, Nyla and her little man Uziah; a brother, Charles Poindexter (Barbara) of Spotsylvania; four sisters, Pearl White of Spotsylvania, Ellen Simms, Mary Comfort, Barbara Poindexter, all of Maryland; a brother-in-law, Clarence Jackson of Spotsylvania; an Aunt, Etta May Coleman of Spotsylvania; a devoted nephew, James “Turner” Poindexter of Maryland; a very close friend Ms. Catherine Brown and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. 21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
A visitation will be held from 10:30-12:00 noon on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Branch Fork Baptist Church, Spotsylvania, with a funeral service to begin at 12 noon. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Online guestbook available at johnsoncares.com.
