Obituary

Brett Christian Stannard, age 42, left this world for his spirit journey on January 26, 2019. He was born in Leadville, Colorado on a beautiful spring day in 1976, and currently resided in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Survivors include his mother Lorie Lawson, his step-father Gene Koontz, sisters Melissa Cadwalader and Crystal Stannard, daughter Sophia Stannard, step-mother La Shaun Andrews, half-sisters La Shaun, Casey, and Rorie Stannard, step sisters Ashlee and Summerlee Samaska, four lovely nieces, an adorable young nephew, girlfriend Geri Margolis, and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Col. George W. and Faith G. Stannard, his maternal grandparents, Jerry M. Lawson and Maurine and Forest Acker, his father George B. Stannard, and his Uncles Brett and Todd Stannard.
Brett was a gifted musician, and was known by many in the Fredericksburg community for his passion for music, his artistic creativity, and his ability to channel a beautiful melody from most any instrument. His creativity extended into the kitchen, where his explorations were always unique, flavorful, and most times edible. Brett’s love of cars and motorcycles began when he was just a toddler, and started to exhibit an uncanny knack for identifying nearly every make and model on the road. Later, in adulthood, he delighted in being consulted, and perhaps badgered, by family and friends on their automotive needs. As a young boy, Brett’s profound interest in the martial arts led to a lifelong study and ultimately to becoming an accomplished martial artist. To watch him perform his wealth of highly skilled movements was to watch poetry in motion.
Brett was intelligent, charismatic, generous, and he possessed a thoroughly original sense of humor that could double you over with laughter. He had the kindest of hearts, was honorable to his core, and his belief in the sanctity of family was unshakable. His strongly held spiritual teachings and his extraordinary fortitude saw him through the daily trials of this earth.
Brett’s presence among us will be dearly, dearly missed by all who knew and cared for him. We love him now and always, hold him now and always, and will tell his story to all who will listen. We will not forget.
A celebration of Brett’s life will be held at the Fredericksburg Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 25 Chalice Circle, on February 2nd at 2:00 pm. On-line condolences may be offered at Johnson Funeral Home.
“In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory.”
