Bert Heffernan passed away peacefully in his Locust Grove, Virginia home on Saturday, December 1 at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gia, brother Roy, son Bertram, daughters Nancy Tartaro (Mike), Tracey Merrill (Dave) and Leslie Jenkins (Rich), grandchildren, Sam (Nichole), Luke, Katie, Mike and Jessie, great-grandson, Finn and the many nephews and nieces, with whom he stayed close all of his years.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Springfield Gardens, Queens, During the Korean War he served in the Army.
His first career was In professional baseball. He pitched a perfect game for the Pensacola Fliers in 1949. When he retired from baseball, Bert joined his brothers in the family business of Heffernan Trucking Company. He and his wife, Gia raised their family in Selden, NY.
Bert retired from the Newspaper and Mail Deliveries Union in 1992. He and Gia made their home at Lake of the Woods. An avid golfer and competitive bowler, Bert could usually be found on the course or at the lanes, enjoying the camaraderie of sport.
During retirement Bert travelled the country to spend time with beloved nephews and nieces and to be part of the many school, sporting and milestone events of the children and grandchildren he adored. He will be remembered by us for his integrity, sense of humor, love of athletics, and mostly, for his sheer enjoyment of being with family.
A celebration of Bert’s life will be held at Lake of the Woods Church, Locust Grove, VA at 10:00am on Monday, December 17th. Interment at Quantico National Cemetery will follow at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to Lake of the Woods Church or the Mary Washington Hospice.
