On January 5, 2019, Bernard Harry Merritt, Sr. passed away surrounded by family. He was born on May 9, 1935 in Washington, DC to Bernard W. Merritt and Ethel Mae Merritt (Casseen). Growing up in Washington, Bernie was a batboy for the Washington Senators from 1951-1952. He graduated from Anacostia High School in 1953. Bernie received his AA degree from Strayer University. He married Katherine Bianco February 23, 1958. Bernie served in the Navy from 1957-1959. He was employed with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 30 years.
Bernie was a member of the Anacostia Masonic Lodge from the age of 21 until his death, following the legacy of his father and grandfather. He was recently recognized for his 60 year membership.
He was the proud owner of Trombino’s deli and catering in Accokeek, MD from 1988-1998. Bernie worked at the Architect of the Capitol and was responsible for implementing the recycling program. Bernie moved to Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, VA, where he along with this wife, Kathy, became one of the most successful real estate teams in the area.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Katherine Grace Merritt (Bianco), sister Patricia Logan (husband Jim), son Bernie Jr., (wife Nancy), son Mark, and two granddaughters Caitlin Wilson (husband Pat), Casey Merritt, and several nieces and nephews. Bernie was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Mae Merritt and his parents.
The memorial service will be held on January 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Lake of the Woods Church, One Church Lane, Locust Grove, VA, with a luncheon following at the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse, 102 Lakeview Parkway in Locust Grove VA.
